If you’ve experienced a traumatic event, such as violence, assault, domestic abuse or another crime, support is available — and in many cases, it’s fully funded by the NSW Government. In this article, we’ll explain what Victims Services counselling is, who’s eligible, and how to access care through providers like Zenvia.
What Is Victims Services NSW?
Victims Services is a branch of the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) that provides practical and emotional support to people affected by crime in New South Wales.
One of the key supports offered is free, trauma-informed counselling through the Victims Support Scheme. You don’t need to report the crime to police or have legal proceedings underway to be eligible — the focus is on your wellbeing and recovery.
What Types of Counselling Are Available?
Approved counsellors under the scheme can provide:
- Trauma and grief support
- Trauma and grief support
- Help with anxiety, depression and PTSD
- Relationship and family support
- Assistance navigating feelings of fear, anger or guilt
- Safe spaces to process what happened and regain control
At Zenvia, our counsellors are qualified, trauma-informed, and experienced in supporting survivors of various forms of violence, including domestic violence, sexual assault, childhood abuse, and other complex traumas.

Who Is Eligible?
You may be eligible for Victims Services counselling if you:
- Were the victim of a violent crime in NSW
- Are a family member or witness affected by a crime
- The incident occurred in the past 10 years (or longer, in some cases)
- Are over 18 (or have consent if under 18)
You do not need a GP referral or police report to apply.
How Many Sessions Are Funded?
Most clients are initially approved for 10 counselling sessions, with the possibility to extend to up to 22 sessions depending on your needs and situation.
The cost is covered by the government — you do not need to pay anything.

Can I Choose My Own Counsellor?
Yes. You can request a specific counsellor or provider when applying, or search the Victims Services Approved Counsellor Register.
Zenvia is an approved provider, and you’re welcome to name us on your application. We match clients with trauma-informed counsellors based on their availability, experience, and your preferences (such as gender or specialisation).
What Happens During a Session?
Your sessions are completely confidential. You’ll speak with a registered counsellor who listens without judgment and helps you:
- Process what happened
- Rebuild safety and trust
- Learn ways to manage trauma symptoms
- Make empowered choices about recovery
All Zenvia sessions are delivered online via Zoom, which makes access easier if you live in a regional area or prefer privacy at home.
How Do I Apply?
You can apply online in just a few minutes:
- Go to the Victims Services application portal
- Choose “Counselling Support” as the service
- List “Zenvia” as your preferred provider if you wish
- Submit supporting information (you can apply without a police report)
