Understanding Victims Services: Accessing Support After Trauma

When someone experiences a traumatic event—such as domestic violence, sexual assault, or another act of violence—seeking help can feel overwhelming. That’s where Victims Services steps in, offering practical and emotional support to help people in New South Wales begin the journey to recovery.

At Zenvia, we’re proud to be an approved provider of counselling under the NSW Victims Support Scheme. In this article, we break down what Victims Services offers, how to access it, and how our counsellors can support you along the way.

What Is Victims Services?

Victims Services is a program operated by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice. Its purpose is to provide assistance to people who have been affected by violent crime in New South Wales. This includes emotional support, counselling, financial assistance, and help navigating the

justice system.

If you’ve experienced violence—recently or in the past—you may be eligible for free counselling sessions and other forms of support through this government program.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible if you are:

  • A primary victim (you directly experienced a violent act)
  • A secondary victim (such as a family member who witnessed or was affected by the crime)
  • A family member of someone who died as a result of violence

The crime must have occurred in NSW and been reported to police or another agency (though there are some exceptions for vulnerable clients).

What Support Is Available?

1) Free Counselling

Approved victims can access up to 22 hours of counselling initially, with additional hours possible upon review. At Zenvia, our counsellors are trauma-informed and experienced in working with clients through the Victims Services framework.

2) Financial Assistance

Victims Services can help with:

  • Medical or dental expenses
  • Safety-related expenses (such as changing locks)
  • Lost earnings
  • Funeral costs (for family victims)
  • Recognition payments for the impact of the crime

3) Justice-Related Support

If you’re navigating the legal system, you can access support workers who help with court processes, victims’ impact statements, and connecting you with legal assistance.
